What Is Athletic Therapy? Why You Don't Have to Be an Athlete to See an Athletic Therapist in Calgary

By Dr. Mandy Swinden11/2/2026

Picture a Saturday morning at a packed community rink in Calgary, watching your son play hockey. A young defenceman goes into the boards awkwardly and doesn't get up right away. Before a parent has even made it down from the bleachers, someone in a team jacket is already on the ice, kneeling beside him, calmly asking questions, checking his neck, watching his eyes, and deciding in a matter of seconds whether he can skate off, needs to sit out, or needs an ambulance. That person is very often a Certified Athletic Therapist.

Now picture something a bit less dramatic: a 52-year-old office manager whose shoulder has ached every time she reaches for the top shelf since last spring, or a new mom whose lower back tightens up every time she lifts the car seat. These people often don't call themselves athletes, and yet they are exactly the kind of people athletic therapists help every single week.

We're thrilled to welcome two Certified Athletic Therapists to the team at Elevate Functional Health, and we want to clear up one of the most common misconceptions in Calgary healthcare: athletic therapy is not just for individuals who call themselves athletes. It's for anyone who moves, and that means everyone. (Although TBH, most of you ARE athletes, even though you don't define yourself as one 😉).

So, What Exactly Is Athletic Therapy?

Athletic therapy is a healthcare profession focused on the prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries: the muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, and bones that carry you through your day. What makes athletic therapists unique is that their training spans two worlds that rarely overlap: hands-on clinical rehabilitation and on-the-spot emergency care.

One of the simplest ways to picture it is this: an athletic therapist blends the rehabilitation expertise you'd associate with physiotherapy with the emergency response skills you'd associate with a paramedic. They're as comfortable building you a progressive rehab program in the clinic as they are managing a suspected concussion or spinal injury on a field in the pouring rain.

In Canada, athletic therapists complete a university degree in an accredited athletic therapy program, hundreds of supervised clinical and field hours, and a rigorous national certification exam through the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association. Those who pass earn the designation CAT(C), Certified Athletic Therapist (Canada), and must maintain advanced emergency first-responder training to keep it.

Where the "Athletic" Comes In

The "athletic" part of the name comes from where the profession grew up: on the sidelines. Athletic therapists are the people you'll find at hockey tournaments, rugby pitches, dance competitions, and ski hills, because they are trained to handle far more than sprained ankles.

On the field, an athletic therapist is trained to:

  • Respond immediately to acute injuries, from dislocations and fractures to head and neck trauma

  • Recognize red flags for serious medical events that have nothing to do with muscles at all, such as cardiac emergencies, heat illness, diabetic episodes, or severe allergic reactions

  • Assess suspected concussions and make the critical call on whether an athlete is safe to keep playing

  • Guide a safe, structured return to play once an injury has healed

That same calm, sharp clinical judgment walks into the treatment room with them. When you see an athletic therapist in the clinic, you're getting someone who has been trained to think quickly, spot what doesn't add up, and know when something needs to be referred elsewhere.

Athletic Therapy Is for Everyone

Here's the part that surprises most people: the injuries athletes get aren't so different from the injuries everyone else gets. A rolled ankle is a rolled ankle whether it happened on a soccer field or stepping off a curb on 17th Avenue. A sore shoulder doesn't care if it came from pitching or from painting the living room.

Athletic therapists in Calgary regularly work with:

  • Weekend warriors and recreational athletes: runners, golfers, pickleball players, skiers, hikers, and gym-goers

  • Desk workers: neck pain, tension headaches, mid-back stiffness, and the aches that come from eight hours in front of a screen

  • Active adults and seniors: arthritic joints, balance and fall prevention, and staying strong enough to keep doing the things you love

  • People recovering from surgery: post-operative rehab after knee, shoulder, hip, or ankle procedures

  • Workplace and motor vehicle injuries: getting you back to work and daily life safely

  • Youth and teens: growing-pain-related injuries, concussion management, and injury prevention for young athletes

If your body is keeping you from doing something you want to do, whether that's a marathon or a morning walk with your dog, an athletic therapist can help.

Athletic Therapy vs. Physiotherapy: What's the Difference?

This is the question we hear most often, and it's a fair one. Athletic therapists and physiotherapists treat many of the same conditions and share a lot of the same tools: manual therapy, joint mobilization, soft-tissue work, taping, and exercise-based rehabilitation. In practice, both are excellent choices for most muscle and joint injuries, and many people benefit from seeing both.

The differences come down to training emphasis and approach:

Training focus

Physiotherapy education is broad, covering musculoskeletal care alongside areas like neurological rehabilitation, cardiorespiratory care, and hospital-based practice. Athletic therapy education is concentrated specifically on the musculoskeletal system and emergency care, with deep training in injury mechanics and getting active people back to full function.

An exercise-first, movement-based approach

Athletic therapists lean heavily on active rehabilitation. Rather than relying mostly on passive treatments, they'll analyze how you actually move, identify which motions and activities are aggravating your injury, and build a progressive program that rebuilds strength, mobility, and confidence. Treatment is designed around a clear end goal: getting you back to what you love, with fewer limitations and a lower risk of the injury coming back.

Looking for the root cause

Athletic therapists are trained to look beyond the spot that hurts. Knee pain might be coming from weak hips; a stubborn shoulder might really be a mid-back mobility problem. By treating the body as a connected system, they aim to fix the reason the injury happened, not just hush the symptoms.

What to Expect at Your First Athletic Therapy Appointment

Your first visit typically starts with a conversation about your injury, your health history, your daily routine, and, most importantly, your goals. From there, your athletic therapist will complete a thorough hands-on assessment that may include movement screens, strength and range-of-motion testing, and special orthopaedic tests to pinpoint what's going on.

Treatment often begins in that very first session and may include manual therapy, soft-tissue release, taping, and targeted exercises. You'll leave with a clear explanation of your injury, a plan for recovery, and a home exercise program designed for your body and your life. Ideally, wear comfortable clothing you can move in, but if you forget, we've got you 😉.

The Elevate Difference: Athletic Therapy Within Collaborative Care

What sets athletic therapy at Elevate Functional Health apart is the team around it. Our clinic brings together naturopathic medicine, regenerative injection therapies, massage therapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and now athletic therapy, all under one roof in Northeast Calgary.

That means your athletic therapist can easily collaborate with the rest of your care team. Stubborn joint pain that isn't responding to rehab alone? Our naturopathic doctor can explore inflammation, nutrition, and regenerative options like prolotherapy. Tight, guarded muscles slowing your progress? Massage therapy can help. You're not passed from clinic to clinic; you're supported by one team working toward one goal.

Is Athletic Therapy Covered by Insurance?

Many extended health benefit plans in Alberta include coverage for athletic therapy, often in the same way they cover physiotherapy or massage. Coverage varies between plans, so we always recommend checking your benefits booklet or calling your provider to confirm what's included before your first visit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Athletic Therapy in Calgary

Do I need a referral to see an athletic therapist?

No. You can book directly with an athletic therapist without a doctor's referral. Some insurance plans do require a referral for reimbursement, so it's worth checking your plan.

Can I see an athletic therapist if I'm not an athlete?

Absolutely. Athletic therapists treat people of all ages and activity levels, from desk workers with neck pain to grandparents who want to keep up with their grandkids.

What conditions do athletic therapists treat?

Common conditions include sprains and strains, back and neck pain, tendinitis, shoulder and knee injuries, concussions, post-surgical rehabilitation, postural pain, and workplace or repetitive strain injuries.

Should I see a physiotherapist or an athletic therapist?

For most muscle and joint injuries, either is a great choice. If you're unsure, give our team a call. We'll help you get started with the practitioner who best fits your needs.
