Recovery Taking Longer After 40? Here's What To Do About It.

By Dr. Mandy Swinden, ND1/19/2026

Full disclosure, I personally am not over 40 yet...but, I am a few years away from this milestone, and have started to notice changes in recovery taking place.

Especially this summer when I returned to playing rugby after a 13 year hiatus.

Myself and two other women on the team were of "Advanced Age" compared to all the other players, who were all in their early twenties. It was nice to at least have a two other teammates who understood the topic of this week's blog - and it was also interesting to see the stark contrast in recovery ability between us three and the rest of the the players.

My experience this summer allowed me to fully realize just how much recovery changes over the years, but also that it's not impossible to bounce back - it just requires some serious effort.

Sorry to be the barrier of bad news, but partying until 2am after playing 80 minutes of rugby is not how you recover from this sport in your late thirties and beyond.

So let's get into how we actually recover, even from a sport as intense and vicious as rugby.

First of all, you are not imagining any of this.

Workouts hit harder.

Soreness lingers longer.

Sleep doesn’t always fix it.

And injuries that once resolved in days now take weeks...

This isn’t a personal failure.

It’s biology.

But there is good news! Once you understand why recovery slows with age, you can take targeted steps to speed it back up — and stay active for life.

This Isn’t About Getting Old

It’s About Physiology Changing

Recovery after 40 takes longer because several biological systems shift at the same time:

1. Mitochondrial efficiency declines

We talk about mitochondria a LOT over here! They are your cells’ energy factories, and so critical to basically every aspect of our health.

With age, they:

  • Produce less ATP
  • Accumulate more oxidative stress
  • Recover more slowly after exertion

📚 Research shows age-related declines in mitochondrial function contribute directly to fatigue and slower tissue repair

2. Inflammation sticks around longer

After training or injury, inflammation is necessary — but resolution is just as important.

As we age:

  • Pro-inflammatory cytokines increase
  • Anti-inflammatory signaling decreases
  • “Inflammaging” becomes the baseline

📚 Chronic low-grade inflammation is now considered a key driver of delayed recovery and tissue degeneration after 40 (PMID: 24569529).

3. Hormonal recovery signals weaken

This affects both men and women.

  • Growth hormone and IGF-1 decline
  • Testosterone and estrogen fluctuate or drop
  • Cortisol recovery slows

These hormones aren’t about aesthetics — they’re about repair, adaptation, and resilience.

📚 Lower anabolic hormone signaling is associated with reduced muscle protein synthesis and slower recovery in aging athletes (PMID: 26911633).

4. Nutrient absorption and hydration efficiency drop

Even if your diet hasn’t changed, your ability to:

  • Absorb micronutrients
  • Maintain electrolyte balance
  • Stay hydrated at the cellular level

…often has.

This is one of the most under-recognized reasons recovery slows after 40.

Why “Just Train Less” Is the Wrong Advice

Many people are told:

“Well, you’re over 40 — just scale back.”

🙄🙄🙄

That advice misses the point. And I don't know about you, but scaling back is the last thing I want to do.

Luckily, the problem isn’t the training or intensity.

It’s insufficient recovery support for a body with higher biological demands.

What you actually need is:

  • Better recovery inputs
  • Faster replenishment
  • Nervous system regulation
  • Metabolic support

This is where IV therapy and TCM acupuncture become powerful tools — not as indulgences, but as strategic interventions.

How IV Therapy Speeds Recovery After 40

IV therapy bypasses digestion and delivers fluids, electrolytes, and key nutrients directly into the bloodstream.

Why this matters more after 40:

  • Gut absorption is often less efficient
  • Hydration needs increase
  • Mitochondrial nutrient demand is higher
  • Recovery windows are shorter

IV therapy supports recovery by:

  • Rapidly restoring cellular hydration
  • Repleting magnesium, B vitamins, and vitamin C
  • Supporting mitochondrial energy production
  • Reducing oxidative stress
  • Improving sleep quality in the days following treatment

📚 Studies show IV micronutrient therapy improves fatigue, exercise tolerance, and recovery markers in stressed or depleted populations (PMID: 34398403).

At Elevate, IV therapy isn’t about pushing harder — it’s about recovering smarter.

How TCM Acupuncture Restores the Recovery Signal

One of the most overlooked aspects of recovery after 40 is the nervous system.

Many active adults are stuck in:

  • Chronic sympathetic dominance (fight-or-flight)
  • Elevated cortisol
  • Poor parasympathetic recovery

TCM acupuncture helps by:

  • Shifting the nervous system into parasympathetic mode
  • Improving blood flow to muscles and connective tissue
  • Reducing pain and muscle guarding
  • Supporting sleep and stress regulation

📚 Research shows acupuncture improves delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), autonomic balance, and recovery speed in athletes (PMID: 30622608).

In simple terms:

👉 Acupuncture helps your body remember how to recover.

The Longevity Equation After 40

Staying active long-term isn’t about doing less.

It’s about:

  • Supporting recovery as aggressively as training
  • Replenishing what age and stress deplete
  • Using the right tools at the right time

At Elevate, we often combine:

  • Training + physiotherapy
  • Prolotherapy (when structure is the issue)
  • IV therapy for cellular recovery
  • Acupuncture for nervous system reset

Because recovery isn’t one system — it’s ALL of them.

The Bottom Line

If recovery feels slower after 40, you’re not broken.

Your body just needs more support to do the same work.

With the right recovery strategies — including IV therapy and TCM acupuncture — you can:

  • Train consistently
  • Recover faster
  • Reduce injury risk
  • And stay active for decades to come
