🩺 A Quick History of Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy isn’t new — not even close. It was first developed in the 1930s by Dr. Earl Gedney, an osteopathic surgeon who used dextrose injections to strengthen loose ligaments and relieve chronic pain.

Since then, the treatment has evolved and been studied extensively. Decades of clinical research now support prolotherapy for conditions like:

Knee osteoarthritis
Tennis elbow
Low back pain
Shoulder instability
Ligament and tendon injuries

👉 In short: it’s not experimental. It’s evidence-based — and it’s been quietly helping patients for nearly 100 years.

⚗️ What the Research Says

Modern research continues to validate prolotherapy’s effectiveness.

Studies show that prolotherapy can:

Stimulate fibroblast activity (the cells that rebuild connective tissue)
Improve joint stability
Decrease pain and stiffness
Enhance overall function

For example, a 2023 randomized controlled trial by Yildiz et al. found that prolotherapy produced significant improvements in pain and function for knee osteoarthritis compared to physiotherapy alone (PMID: 37745156).

Translation? It works — and not just because people “believe in it.” It works because it stimulates your body’s own repair mechanisms. In fact, statistics who that 85-90% of all patients treated with prolotherapy receive at least a 50% benefit when treated between two and ten times. This percentage is even higher within my patient base, because thorough assessments are performed, and if prolotherapy is not the correct treatment for the patient, it is not performed.

💡 So… Why Don’t Family Doctors Talk About It?

This is where the gap lies.

1️⃣ It’s not part of conventional medical training.

Most medical schools focus on pharmacology and surgery — not regenerative medicine. Unless a physician has done post-graduate work in this area, prolotherapy simply isn’t on their radar.

2️⃣ It doesn’t fit the “prescribe or operate” model.

Prolotherapy isn’t a pill, and it’s not a surgery. It’s a procedure that sits in a grey zone between the two — a space that conventional healthcare doesn’t always support or fund.

3️⃣ It’s not covered by public healthcare.

Because prolotherapy isn’t part of the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP), it’s considered an “alternative” treatment — even though the evidence base continues to grow.

4️⃣ It requires specialized training.

Not every practitioner is qualified to perform prolotherapy safely and effectively. It takes skill, precision, and an in-depth understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy.

🧬 Why Prolotherapy Is Gaining Traction

The good news? Awareness is growing fast. 🙌🏻

As patients become more proactive about their health — and more skeptical of “quick fixes” — regenerative medicine is stepping into the spotlight.

Athletes, weekend warriors, and active adults are looking for drug-free, non-surgical options that actually address the root cause of pain. And prolotherapy fits that perfectly.

Research is catching up. Clinics like Elevate Functional Health are leading the way in combining prolotherapy with physiotherapy, nutrition, and metabolic support — creating results that are lasting, not temporary.

🏃‍♂️ The Bottom Line

If you’ve never heard of prolotherapy before, it’s not because it doesn’t work — it’s because it hasn’t been taught, funded, or promoted within mainstream medicine.

But the tide is changing. As more research emerges and more patients share their success stories, prolotherapy is becoming recognized for what it truly is: a powerful, evidence-based solution for joint pain and injury recovery.
