Move Like You Used To - Without Surgery

By Dr. Mandy Swinden, ND3/17/2025

As we age, our bodies naturally undergo various changes that can affect our mobility and flexibility. Many people find themselves reminiscing about their younger days when they could move freely without discomfort. Fortunately, there is a wealth of non-surgical options available that can help you regain your mobility and improve your overall quality of life. In this article, we’ll explore effective strategies to help you move like you used to—without the need for invasive procedures.

Understanding the Importance of Metabolic Health

Recent research has started looking at the relationship between metabolic syndrome and (also known as the deadly quartet), and osteoarthritis.

Often we think about our joint health as separate from our metabolic health, but in reality, nothing is completely separate when it comes human physiology.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) comprises obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. What research has discovered in the past couple years, is that metabolic syndrome can have a causal relationship to osteoarthritis.

While many of us believe our joints begin to degenerate as we age and that there is nothing we can do about it, the latest data states otherwise.

Metabolic syndrome is very much a lifestyle related disease.

Yes, there are genetic components to one's susceptibility, however, proper diet, exercise, sleep and stress management can and are used as effective treatment modalities, as well as to prevent the onset and progression of metabolic syndrome.

The Other Causes of Osteoarthritis

Moving with improper biomechanics is another culprit of osteoarthritis and degeneration of our joints as we age.

When we engage our muscles properly, they take the brunt of the force, as opposed to our joints.

This is also why we want to avoid joint surgeries at all costs - any time a joint is "tinkered with", it forever changes the biomechanics of that joint.

Personally, I am dealing with the aftermath of an ACL reconstructive surgery I had when I was 23. The last MRI I had on this knee showed severe osteoarthritis, and 2.5 pages of degenerative changes!

Non-Surgical Options to Improve Biomechanics and Prevent Joint Degeneration

If you're looking to enhance your movement capabilities without resorting to surgery, consider the following non-invasive approaches:

1. Physical Therapy

A tailored physical therapy program can be incredibly beneficial for improving your biomechanics. Ensuring you are moving well, is a big part of prevention AND treatment of joint pathologies.

2. Regular Exercise

Engaging in regular physical activity is vital for maintaining muscle strength and joint function. Which is why we don't want to STOP moving, but we want to do #1, ensure we are moving well, and keep on moving. Furthermore, we know that regular exercise helps immensely with the treatment and prevention of metabolic syndrome.

3. Nutritional Support

Your diet plays a significant role in how well your body functions as it ages. Incorporate anti-inflammatory foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (like salmon), antioxidants (such as berries), whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and adequate hydration into your meals to promote overall joint health, and again, treat and prevent metabolic syndrome.

4. Mind-Body Techniques

Meditation practices such as Tai Chi or yoga not only enhance flexibility but also improve balance while reducing stress levels. Stress is a very underrated component of metabolic syndrome, that is arguably the most difficult to address.

5. Prolotherapy

This regenerative joint injection therapy has been used for decades to reduce joint pain and restore joint function. It is a great non-surgical option to help you continue to move like you did in your younger years, and it is our specialty at Elevate Functional Health.

Your Path Forward

You don’t have to accept limited mobility as a part of aging. With dedication toward implementing these strategies into everyday life—you too could soon experience newfound freedom akin those youthful days long gone by.
