You’ve been sidelined by an injury. You’ve seen the scans, you’ve talked to your physio, and now you’re being told: “You might need surgery.”

That sentence alone can make even the toughest athlete break out in a cold sweat.

Before you rush to book an OR date — or avoid the conversation entirely — let’s unpack what the science actually says about when surgery is necessary, and when your body can heal without it .

Because sometimes the knife is needed — and sometimes, there are other options.

### First, Let’s Be Clear: Surgery Saves Lives (and Careers)

Let’s start here, because I’ll never be the clinician who says “surgery is bad.” I myself have had 2 joint surgeries; one to repair my ruptured ACL, and another to repair the labrum in my right shoulder.

There are absolutely times when surgery is the best path forward.

Examples include:

- Complete ligament or tendon ruptures (like ACL or Achilles tears)
- Major fractures or joint dislocations
- Severe meniscus or labral tears that physically block joint motion
- Acute trauma where tissue is too damaged to regenerate on its own

In these cases, surgical repair can restore function and prevent long-term degeneration.

If you’re dealing with one of these, you want a great orthopaedic surgeon in your corner — and the right rehab and regenerative support to optimize healing after.

### When “Wait and See” is Actually the Smart Move

Now for the grey zone — the space where most injuries live.

Many athletes and active adults are told they “might” need surgery… but aren’t given a full picture of their options.

This is where I tell my patients:

👉 If it’s not torn in half or hanging off the bone, you usually have time to explore non-surgical care first. Partial ligament tears, tendinopathies, cartilage wear, and mild labral injuries often respond extremely well to regenerative injection therapy (like prolotherapy) combined with physiotherapy and metabolic support .

These treatments:

- Stimulate collagen repair in ligaments and tendons
- Improve joint stability
- Reduce inflammation
- Support recovery without cutting into healthy tissue

You can always choose surgery later if conservative care fails. But once tissue is cut — that option is gone.

### The Role of Regenerative Medicine in Injury Recovery

Regenerative therapies like prolotherapy work by triggering your body’s natural healing cascade.

When injected into damaged ligaments or tendons, a glucose-based solution stimulates fibroblasts and growth factors — the same cells your body would activate during surgical healing, just without the incision 🙂.

The result:

- Stronger, more stable tissue
- Faster recovery
- Lower re-injury risk once you return to sport

Paired with physiotherapy, it’s often the difference between “rehabbing forever” and actually healing .

### The Mental Side: Fear vs. Pressure

One of the hardest parts of deciding on surgery isn’t just physical — it’s emotional.

Athletes often feel torn (pun intended 😅) between two extremes:

- Fear of never getting back to sport without surgery
- Fear of rushing into something irreversible

Here’s the truth: most injuries fall somewhere in between.

The key is getting a full, unbiased assessment from a clinician who understands both surgical and non-surgical options — and can guide you based on your unique injury, not blanket advice..

### The Best Outcomes Come from Collaboration

At Elevate Functional Health, we take a collaborative approach .

We work alongside physiotherapists, orthopaedic specialists, and sports medicine physicians to make sure you get the best of both worlds — traditional diagnostics and regenerative care.

Sometimes that means supporting you after surgery to optimize recovery.

Other times, it means helping you avoid surgery altogether.

Either way, the goal is the same:

👉 Get you back to your sport — stronger, stable, and pain-free!

#### T he Bottom Line

Surgery isn’t the enemy — unnecessary surgery is. If you’ve been told you “need surgery,” take a breath. Get a second opinion. Explore regenerative care first.

Because while surgery can rebuild what’s broken, regenerative medicine can often help your body rebuild itself.

And that’s worth exploring before you go under the knife.
